THE NAPPY CREAM CHALLENGE
A little run down on the harmful ingredients that can be found in a baby’s nappy cream.
Harmful ingredients: PEG, TEA, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, parabens, lanolin (unless organic), 1,4-dioxane, fragrance, coal tar colors, ammonia, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate.
Lotions are basically a mixture of water and oil, with an emulsifier added to keep the product from separating.
-PEG is the most common emulsifier in hand lotions. It can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen.
-TEA is also used and has been found in most sensitisers. Contact can cause dermatitis.
TEA, DMDM hydantoin and quaternium-15 can release carcinogenic formaldehyde.
-Parabens, which are estrogen mimics, are commonly used as preservatives.
– Lanolin is often found in lotions, a product derived from animals which can be contaminated with pesticides and it is a common allergen.
Below are a few of the popular nappy creams.
1) California Baby
Parabens: no
Lanolin (non-organic): no
Fragrance: no
Ammonia: no
Smell: its scent free.
But to me, it smells like breastmilk (personal opinion)
Organic: yes
Overall Score: 9/10
I personally like this nappy cream ALOT as it is one of the most natural nappy creams around. It felt nice on the skin, not too sticky in our humid weather and I like that it has a light texture. I applied it onto my skin and in 5 mins, my rash settled down.
This also doubles as a cream to apply on your little angel if he/she suffers from ezema. Much better than applying the prescribed steroid cream as it thins our baby’s skin!
The only thing that is keeping this product from a full score is the price.
2) Desitin
Parabens: yes
Lanolin (non-organic): yes
Fragrance: yes
Ammonia: no
Smell: A very sweet pleasant smell
Organic: no
Overall Score: 5/10
I rated this product low. I applied it onto my skin and it did calm the rash down. However, there are so many harmful ingredients hidden inside this rescue cream, I would not use it.
It has many of toxic ingredients that I have mentioned above.
3) Mustela
Parabens: no
Lanolin (non-organic): yes
Fragrance: yes
Ammonia: no
Smell: Very sweet baby smell.
Organic: no
Overall Score: 6/10
I rated this product pretty low too because of the same reasons as the Desitin nappy cream. It has less toxic ingredients but still has too many. Also, Mustela Vitamin Barrier cream is slightly more pricey than the Desitin Rapid Relief cream.
I did use this on my son when he was a newborn as a prevention and he didn’t get a nappy rash.
4) Sebamed
Parabens: no
Lanolin (non-organic): yes
Fragrance: yes
Ammonia: no
Smell: Nice pleasant scent
Organic: no
Overall Score: 3/10
Nothing special about this cream, I feel that compared to the other nappy creams, this product did not soothe or calm my rashy skin as effectively. It also contains many harmful ingredients and certainly not at all natural.
5) Drapolene
Parabens: no
Lanolin (non-organic): yes
Fragrance: unsure
Ammonia: no
Smell: smells pretty common, its not a scent or a unique fragrant.
Organic: no
Overall Score: 7/10
Its very very affordable! You can get it from small stores in your neighbourhood at $6SGD – $6.50SGD. Its very light and i would recommend it for daily use. Its not as harmful or as strong as Desitin. Best used BEFORE the rashes appear as prevention.
I hope the above information help you mummies and daddies out while you’re out shopping for your baby’s bum. Thanks for reading and have a nice weekend. smile emoticon
